In our present days there's few subjects so hard as this. There’s two extremes about it, but I think you cannot think about abortion as something totally light or dark... For me this subject contains a lot of middle tones.
Life is mainly about change, and some things such as ideology could change; it depends of our experiences, environment, physical changes, our own decisions, our consume habits, or even the influence of people that surround us.
That's the reason why I take care about the many ways of interpretation of this work... These could be postive or negative, but that was the affair! I did it with the intention to generate different thoughs in the auddience and generate debate. For me, in this moment of my live I have some things clear in my position about abortion:
1. The state shouldn’t subsidize people who claims abortion as a right, when the cause of the pregnancy was irresponsabilty. “You cannot subsidize irresponsibility and expect people to become more responsible.”
2. The state should help for the abortion as a benefit when the woman was victim of a confirmed rape and, in this case, the rapist should have death penalty.
3. The abortion should be totally legal when the fetus comes with some desease.
4. The abortion should be totally legal when the health of the woman is in danger.
P.S. I dont have a developed position about the morality in the abortion cases when the woman or the baby are not in danger... So I don't have a formed opinion about these cases, but I prefer to know yours. In my case, I'm not a father or a woman, so I dont have the full panorama about this kind of situations. In my sexual life I just preffer avoid a stage where abortion could be one of the options. that is my way to protect life.
This painting could have many interpretations, it depends of your thoughs about the subject: For me, the demon in this painting represents the State with all its corrupt power, using the high loud of its voice and the force above our decitions, responsabilities and individual liberties.
Maybe, for a woman victim of rape, the demon could represent the evilness of the criminal who abbused her.
Maybe, for a religious person or a conservative one, the demon could represent the choice of women who decide to abort.
Maybe, for a confused woman who doesn't know what to do in this kind of situation, the demon could represent the doubt, and the weight of society's morality above her own decitions.
Maybe if the baby could reason and talk, The baby would have another interpretation about the painting... And based in the last point, was the reason why I tittled this artwork "The baptism of a non-existent" thinking about the echo of the silenced voice of someone who can't talk and opine; The forgotten individual.
